Hello folks, and now, I bring you a rant that has ABSO-POSI-LUTELY NOTHING to do with Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. Thank god, cause if I have to make another "rant" regarding that game, I think I'd have to start a zombie apocalypse with some 245 - Trioxin. Instead, this rant is going to be on the subject of a game that has been the subject of tons of controversy.

If your a fan of Capcom, you'll probably be familiar with the famous hack-n'-slash franchise known as Devil May Cry. Well, in September 2010, Capcom officially announced that there would be a new Devil May Cry installment in the series. It would be an origin story that established how Dante, the main protagonist of the series, came to grips with his half-demon half-human heritage, and Capcom would outsource the game to Ninja Theory, a company known for only 2 major titles: Heavenly Sword and Enslaved.

With the announcement came a few screenshots and a trailer of the game. In the 4 Devil May Cry titles before this, Dante had slightly long white hair and a normally clean face. In the screenshots and trailer, however, he sports short black hair, and his face now has a few bruises here and there. Also worth noting is the fact that he smokes.

Now, think back a year earlier to September 2009. It was that time that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 was announced and had a teaser trailer. One certain individual known, at the time, as Aknotholeresident made a video showing his initial reaction to the trailer. In short, he was not pleased with not only the trailer, but Sonic 4 as a whole, stating the fact that Sega used the modern Sonic model as his reason.

Well, when Dante's new design was revealed, the fans' reactions were roughly the same as Aknot-headed nutcase's. In fact, they were furious. They constantly bitched and moaned about the design, claiming that the game would suck because of Dante's character design and blaming both Capcom and Ninja Theory.

Now, I was furious as well, but for different reasons. I wasn't mad at Capcom or Ninja Theory, and I wasn't upset about the character design for Dante. Rather, I was upset at the people who were upset at the character design. You see, unlike most idiots who make a big deal of things when it comes to video games, I'm willing to look past something as trivial as a character design.

Back when I first joined deviantART, I wasn't on this BatCountryDouche account. I was instead on an account called TheChris9000. I was a complete and total noob back then, so all I did was upload stupid shit such as demotivational posters (pretty much stuff you'll find by looking in my Scrap bin). With my second demotivational poster, I ranted in the description about how stupid the Devil May Cry fans were acting. Fortunately for me, I didn't conjure a negative response.

So, it's about a year later. New games have been announced, new gameplay has been shown, I'm now on a new account thanks to some e-drama that I'd rather not discuss...

... and yet, everyone's still on square one... I still stand by what I said... and everyone feels exactly the same way.

Why are people still complaining about this bullshit? I honestly have no fucking idea why the Devil May Cry fans are so hellbent on letting everyone know that this game will "suck" (and I use that term EXTREMELY loosely).

Are we really reaching a point in video gaming where character designs determine whether or not a game will be good and fun? It's almost as if gameplay (which is the REAL factor behind a game being good) doesn't matter anymore. I believe that James Rolfe, the Angry Video Game Nerd, said it best when he stated this in his Power Glove review and Atari 5200 review:

What's the most important aspect of any fucking game? Well, being able to fucking play it.

I really should've seen this coming ever since Devil May Cry 4. Why? Well, turns out that DmC isn't the first time that the Devil May Cry fans have shown some stupidity. When Devil May Cry 4 came out, fans were outraged at the fact that the game would have an Xbox 360 port. However, it's STILL not as bad as what the fans are complaining about NOW.

Of course, fans will say that Dante looks like one of the guys at Ninja Theory, and will cite it as a reason why the game will suck. My response is: ............ so?

This isn't the first time that a character has had his or her design based off of someone in real life. Remember Solid Snake from Metal Gear? His body and physique were based off of actors such as Jean-Claude Van Damme. Take a look at Samanosuke from Onimusha (which is ANOTHER franchise from Capcom). His voice actor's face was used for his character model. And for one last example, Jean-Claude Van Damme's appearance was used for Johnny Cage from Mortal Kombat.

So, yeah... there really shouldn't be a problem with basing Dante's new appearance off of someone at Ninja Theory.

Also, the very fact that Ninja Theory is making the game is enough to piss a fan off. Honestly, I don't get what's so bad about Ninja Theory. Not counting that one game (its name escapes me at the moment) that they made as Just Add Monsters, so far, Ninja Theory has only made two games (one of which was pretty good [Heavenly Sword], while the other I haven't played [Enslaved]). Granted, they might not be on the same level as Capcom, but they're sure as hell no LJN.

Well, there's my "rant" on DmC. If the fans don't stop bitching about DmC and Dante's new character design, then I can safely say that there's no hope for the fanbase.
Just letting out some steam here.

I'm calling it now. Someone's gonna call me stupid and troll me for defending New Dante.

If you REALLY want a good rant on people not shutting the fuck up about DmC, go here ---> [link]

You are absolutely right in my opinion.

I'm a huge fan of the series and I will admit that I prefer the original story line and I was displeased with the new look of Dante when I FIRST saw the beginning released videos of this game but I was still excited none-the-less over it. It was interesting! And you know what? I'm completely in love with the new DmC, because I gave it a chance. The game is absolutely wonderful in my opinion and I don't understand why sooo many people are whining and complaining over it. It's not terrible at all. The story line DMC fans are so used to is changed but who cares? It's a re-imagining of the series and I honestly pray that they make a sequel to it; I'm definitely going to buy it.

Back to the look of Dante, like I said, I was displeased when I first saw him, but right away I got over it. I was like, "Eh, he still looks pretty bad ass." Now, I love the look of him, even Vergil (I've heard complaints about him too). It's cool and bitching over his hair, he gets white hair in the game. DmC Devil May Cry is supposed to be before Dante understands who he truly is (like you stated). Who knows? Even if Capcom didn't allow Ninja Theory to work on it too, they could have gone back to the origins and had their beloved Dante with black, short hair too. I love how they made him and all the characters in the game. They did a wonderful job and they should be proud of themselves for making such a marvelous game.

I have a feeling, however, that it's not just because this is Devil May Cry that everybody's so upset with it. It seems like lately, everybody is upset with EVERYTHING. Whether its a game, movie, or tv show. People always find the stupidest shit to complain about.

Great rant! (:

I was so happy to learn that there was a new Devil May Cry game, i have Devil May Cry 4 and i've adored it because it was my first PS3 game and my first Devil May Cry game. I'm a big Dante fan and i don't really care that his looks changed. It's a freaking parallel world anything can happen. I did complained a bit it was about the first trailer that was out. Which was in 2010 when i saw Dante smoke, as the trailers went by i saw that they got rid of that part of his personality so now i have nothing to complain about. Only that i don't have it yet

I have played and owned all previous copies of the DMC series. I even own both the original ps2 copies and the HD collection. I have also bought and finished DmC. I loved Dante before but he always seemed to have an ever changing personality along with odd obsessions they (CAPCOM) tossed in to make the character seem more like a person you would meet on the street.

But I personally like this reboot. Dante is cocky as ever, even if he has a foul mouth at times and has his usual perverted streak. And heck, I like how they explained what happened right away about the twins past. Even how Vergil and Dante met up in the game. I also like the controls a bit better. And the WAS some platforming in the original games. Otherwise Dante wouldn't have much use for his jumping ability. And I like how they brought it out with a nice flare and incorporated the battle controls with it as well. I can see why they ranted in the beginning. Even I went "WTF?!" when I saw it.

And here is a real kicker. They are still bitching about the game and movie is being planned. It's being written by the guy who writes the Resident Evil movies. I'm willing to give this movie a chance as long as they don't pulled a Super Mario Bros. stunt and make a cool that has nothing to do with the games except the main characters.

Not talking about the game here, as i love the reboot, however, I am EXTREME skeptical that the guy who written the RE movies will put the DmC movie into good reviews. It's been what, 6 movies? All of them flops. I don't mind a DmC movie, so long as THAT guy doesn't write, because of how bad RE movies are right now. :(

The first two movies were written by the same guy but those after the second RE film were torn into pieces by a different writer. I think the guy who wrote the first two could manage a pretty cool DMC film. But if the guy who wrote the last few RE films, no, I don't want to think of it. It would be horrid.

To those in defense of this game, I agree with you on everything all in all! And I still agree with you!

If people kept being stuck in their own views without watching the latest trailers, interviews, press cons, and demos or even reading the interviews if they're too lazy to watch, then they're just stuck up in their own wantings, shutting their minds off from reasoning and logic, troll and think that their views are the right one while ours aren't.

You know? It would be just as worse if Capcom would go for the opposite thing (sticking to the original canon and not make an alternate universe of DMC). If we keep on looking at Old Dante again and again, then we'd complain too and ask for a new and better Dante. I am glad they took that risk! They were running out of ideas on him anyway and some fans are getting annoyed and tired of him; those fans do have a point.
Despite what I said about him, I still like Old Dante. Just because I like him doesn't mean I cannot be critical about him, meaning sensing his cons!

For those who have legit reasons not to like it, I respect your choice for not liking the new versions of the Sons of Sparda and/or this game. But if those reasons are the same since 2 years ago, then you're just stuck in the past like glue! Too bad you'll miss out on this...

DMC is about making combos (the hack&slash/beat 'em up/ fighting styled action genre that defines it), not the looks of the characters and the setting! Demons can be in any form, in any place!

I would be upset if the game turned into an RPG.

Long as the genre remains the same, long as it's fine.
I too was upset about Dante's new look and yeah, that 2010 version was rubbish. But if you compare that version to the one that's currently used. You'll see GREAT difference.

And now it's all over again, cause people complain about Vergil now :P :P :P

I agree with you; it wouldn't be a DMC game if there was a DMC RPG. They should just turn that into a spin-off instead, if Capcom thought of it that is...

From what I have seen in the Gamerscom Trailer, Vergil still has the ruthlessness of the original. When Dante grew concerned for Kat captured, he never gave a damn about her; he only viewed her as a pawn of his organization. So there is that "brotherly love" hints from DMC3 in which they disagree in a lot of things. He still has that lust for power, even if it means at the cost of others' lives (like in this game now). He indeed found "The Order" using the funds he got. Craving for power can be obsession for any source of it, be it on a demon's power or even wealth!

And it's not the first time the twins worked together; remember DMC3 Mission 19 Arkham battle? That is my most fav boss battle in that game! They did team up, albeit for a very short time. And I also used those two in UMvC3. I was amazed on XusesGB's Sons of Sparda combo montage; I know I can't do long combos like he does, but I know it takes tons of practice to pull it off, provided you have 5 levels of the Hyper gauge filled up!

Wow, you put my thoughts into words! I cant agree with this enough!
I came into the fandom late, i only decided to play the other Devil May Crys AFTER i saw one of the recent trailers for the reboot.
And honestly, i cant wait for the new one. I think it looks beautiful, and will have a sense of story 10x better then any of the previous games.
People complain that they also took Dante's 'personality' away. But face the facts, franchises and game series DONT last forever. So even if you arnt interested in the reboot, why stick around to bitch about it? Why not go back and play the older ones! Im upset some of my childhood franchises dont run anymore (Jak and Daxter for example ) but i got over it. It has a good run, and made good memories, but i dont expect it to last forever. So even if the game is a flop, least you have those old memories to remember and love.
Considering these guys are SUCH big mans of DmC, shouldnt they be supporting Capcom and NT?
Im a huge fan of Assassins Creed, and if went from ubisoft to another developer, i would still support the shit out of it, because its the series i love and even if apperances are changed, the game itself is incredbly fun. I just wish fans would have a little more faith in Capcoms choice. They are a huge, well profited company with lots of experience, i can imagine they thought about choosing NT well.

THANK FUCKING GOD. I'm SICK and I'm TIRED of seeing all this..this..BULLSHIT about thsi game which NO ONE hasn't even played yet!
From what I've seen through the gameplay trailers and cutscene trailers, there's nothing to be really pissed off about. It looks like a really good game to me that I'm looking forward to play once it's out. I guess that the whole 'FPS' and 'hack n slash combo being bad' thing is bullshit--the REAL reasons why so-called DMC fans are so butthurt mad about this game is because this newer version of Dante isn't a white-haired bishie who apparently says terrible one-liners and looks like Santa Clause on botox. -__- Now, I used to really like the original DMC series. I still do. But the way these FANFREAKS have been bashing up the reboot DmC just really ruined it for me. Wherever I go, I see people flaming at this new DmC. It's pathetic and really, REALLY agonizing to see (especially since I've survived about 3 rant-battles against stupid fantards).

You really have no idea how glad I am to see SOMEONE out there who actually has some sense and maturity about all this. >.> I totally support your rant.

well, yes, that's a good point. if they really hate it so much, then they should just sit back and not get involved with it or hate on other people who DO show interest in the upcoming game. it's like no one's been taught tolerance or respect back when they were kids.
and no problem. i may've liked old dante, but i gotta admit that some things about him just weren't all that great. of course, i'd wanted to say that he was too much like some overly badass anime character in DMC3, but then again, classic old action anime was the rage back then and i guess they'd shaped his character in that manner to gain the public views of those type of people. now, with the reboot, they're trying to appeal to a newer crowd of gamers by making it more realistic and making the new dante look more like a punk who's grown up in a terrible, urban environment (NEVER mix punk with emo, btw--they're literally two different things and just useless labels made by ignorant 7th graders)

I agree with everything you said here.

And I kinda notice that this Dante can relate to people who are fed up what the media gives them, like in modern Pop music for example (I really hate 1D!) and being talked about in infamy by the news in which you are actually innocent yet the media wants people to believe you are the bad guy.

And to add to that urban environment:
An urban environment that is infested and manipulated by demons; humans are oblivious that they are being controlled by them!

I agree with you 100% on all of this.
I personally think that the new design for Dante fits his more... younger life style. In the anime it STATES that he used to live by the name Anthony Redgrave. Did the DMC fans forget about that?
And if people out there think that this new game ISN'T part of the DMC franchise they are DEAD WRONG!!! This is game is supposed to show you WHAT HAPPENED when Dante was a teenager with a bit more bad-ass way of thinking. SO WHAT if he has dark hair in this game, he is still DANTE people -__- get over yourselves and start paying attention to the smaller details that the videos and so on bring you!
I was at Game Stop today to ask about something cause I talked to my friend and he said that this game wasn't infact part of the DMC series... BUT IT IS!!! 100%
Its a fucking PREQUEL to tell a story BEFORE what happened in DMC3 >.<"

Also... why worry about a characters design when the game play is more important anyways? If you pay attention to the tailors that were out for this game-if you where an actual fan of this game you would pay attention to the GAME PLAY and what the videos fucking show you instead of what Dante looks like -___-

People just need to get over themselves.....

To be honest, a reboot seems to be a an interesting direction for DMC to go with. Starting from scratch and applying some of the familiar elements of a beloved action series to the new interpretation of a different developer is rather risky but at the same time opens the way for something inventive. Besides, I actually like the new design. It's relatable and at the same time makes sense with the context of fighting demons in possessed society. Makes more sense than an anime-esque hero fighting in Vatican style corridors that only work for the Rule of Cool.

Oh my god. It's like you took all of my reasoning and finally made sense of it. I love you so much right now for having some common sense about this. I was absolutely ASTONISHED at how many dislikes the videos to the new DMC game had.
The biggest reason I was shocked was because they weren't hating on the game because they had played it before and KNEW the GAMEPLAY sucked, but because their precious Dante had a different design. It really made me look down on the so-called hardcore DMC fans.
I myself seriously LOVE DMC, and I'm more than perfectly okay with his new design. I'd even go as far to say that I like it. A LOT. The game looks awesome, and each time I find a new video released of it, I get all bubbly inside and can't WAIT till I find out when it will be released.
So thank you for finally having a GOOD VALID POINT. You gain my full respect.

Well said man; well said.

I was at first furious on Dante's appearance, but the old saying "never judge a book by its cover" got to me. I must agree with you at full. Games won't matter in aesthetics/graphics and sounds (SFX and VGM)... It counts entirely on the gameplay; that is what really</u> matters the most!

Yes, I too am tired of 'old' DMC fanboys/fangirls on doing the same overrated 'facts' over and over; therefore I too felt your rage over these fanboys/fangirls. I now believe that, thanks to them, 'old' Dante is overrated (overly famous) while 'new' Dante is overhated (overly infamous). Now I may prefer 'old' Dante but 'new' Dante intrigued me and I don't talk about 'old' Dante all the time...

What those fanboys/fangirls need to realize that life is all about change and nothing will last forever; even us humans, we have a limited time in this world...

I see you linked to the "Ninja Theory Dante" stamp, which I faved. I will fav this rant too.

Thanks man! You kept my spirit as a true and hardcore DMC fan up! I've been down with this game franchise since the first game, but I played it in 2003, so it's nine years and counting for me as a DMC fan! YAY!! :D

I'm glad I used the coin philosophy, which is simply "looking at both sides of the coin"!

Another great news for this game is that Reuben Langdon will voice 'new' Dante. Whoa! He had a different voice tone there...! :D

Once again, this rant opened my mind more for DmC: Devil May Cry (everybody has their own take of one idea anyway; in this case, it's Tameem the developer's take on DMC).

Really, so we're stupid because we don't like were the series is going? We're stupid because we understand that Dante's look had symbolic importance? We're stupid because we don't like being called names by the companies for having concerns? We're stupid because we don't like that DmC is being made with an inferior engine that will effect how the game plays? We're stupid because we're not happy that the game play trailers have shown that the game is slower with choppy and stiff animations and is full of glitches? We're stupid because Capcom has out right threaten in an attempt to force us to buy this game?

You clearly have no clue as to what you're talking about. And here's something else you don't know, most people weren't upset with DMC4 being on the 360 but rather the circumstances around it and the fact that it going multiplaform in the middle of development could effect the game's quality which it ended up doing.

DmC is no longer part of the DMC main universe due to the fanbase complaints and is now considered as a paralleled universe. As for the game engine, Asura's Wrath is using the same engine Ninja Theory is using yet is being a greatly anticipated game.

The very fact that they tried to make it part of the main series shows that the people developing this game don't know what their doing. One of these problems was how Dante looked which had a character derailment aspect to it. Also, they gone back on this being an AU a couple of times now calling it a rebirth.

Asura's Wrath wasn't getting the slack that DmC was because it was a new IP. It didn't have to live up to a standard. DMC has always been at 60fps and a certain style about it.

Dante may look different but he sounds almost the same like the DMC 1 Dante. He uttered a one-liner and seemed amused when seeing parts of Limbo City reshaping itself. He even has a cocky smirk going on. He hates demons and is slaying them for revenge. Besides, the DMC series went through several changes as well: first Dante was slightly cocky but there were some shades of seriousness and resentment. Second Dante was too emo. Third Dante was a smart ass spouting one-liners. Fourth Dante was campy. Where's the rebellion sword from DMC 1 but instead is wielding the Alastor sword and didn't he originally transformed into a full demon with the sword of Sparda? Fans of DMC 1 had complained about DMC 3 and Reuben Langdon got a lot of hate mail for it but after it's release, they praised it and Reuben is now Dante.

No he sounds nothing like DMC Dante and he isn't supposed to be. Ninja Theory has made it clear that they think the original Dante isn't cool and that their Dante would be nothing like him at all. This Dante has been stated to be a looser that's angry at the world so if he ends up like the real Dante its either because Ninja Theory doesn't know what the **** their doing or their to stuck up to admit that they screwed up.

We're not talking about a few well done retcons here, we're talking about how Ninja Theory has no idea as to what DMC is and how they keep shoving their egos in everybody's face.

You make some good points, but the game is still in development. They might just fix whatever problems the game has. So wouldn't it be better to wait to the game comes out and actually play it before you make any permanent opinions about it?

I mean what I look for in a game is whether or not its fun to play. Isn't that what matters the most?

There are games like Tetris and Pac-Man that are popular because they're fun to play. Why should such things like storylines and characters matter so much. Those things mean jack shit if the game isn't fun to play.

True with the rage, I don't mind his look, and the gameplay, and demo reviews in Game informer look good, people need to calm down, and like Dante for the stylish badass he is.
And Dante apparently already has an alternate, with other characters. (Not sure if avalible in Ultimate)

I admit when I FIRST saw him I was confused as to why he looked so beat up and BROWN hair but when I played the demo. . . :squee:! I can't wait to own it! Dante is still Dante after all :D

I'm not exactly a big fan of Dantes look myself, but I'll probably be too busy having fun playing the new dmc to give a shit.

oh thank god someone has a brain and understands the new DmC game. There's only one thing I'm worried about this game and that is will the story line be good and the gameplay be playable. when I watched the trailer the first thing I thought was " this is stupid blah blah blah" then some pointed out that 1. its Dante's past so who knows what he did in it, I mean everyone does stupid shit in there past which could explain the past and 2. its a reboot, people don't seem to get that. okay sure it not capcom isn't make the game. it might be a good change, but then again it may not. who knows ? its not even out yet, so the bitching people should shut up until its out and people have a had a chance to play the game before they say it "sucks". okay I'm good, I got my rant out ....

angry DMC fan: "oh my gosh! if you are a TRUE devil may cry fan, you will not buy and support this devil may cry game!!!

me: "yeah that makes sense :]"

lol yeah im right there with ya, i am tired of everyone's complaining, i am a true devil may cry fan and i am definitely supporting this game! :D so all you "dmc fans" ninja theory isn't the one killing the series, you are when you don't buy the games! :P

I can't say how happy I was to see a rant about the fans bitching about the new game!

Granted, I undrstand why they'd be upset; I was upset at first. But the more I heard and saw of the game, the more understanding I got. If it's supposed to take place before DC3 then it can be anything. He can look however they want him to. The only thing close to an origin story we've got before the DMC3 timeline is the first novel. I loved that but it's not considered canon anymore. T_T I love the Dante the way he's been before this game; and I'd have liked if he still had his white hair but that's a small detail that I'll forgive. Who looks exactly like they did (style wise/build/whatever) as a teenager when they're in their adulthood? Hell, I don't look like I did 5 years ago!

I think the fans are judging it too early; we hardly know anything about it. I don't believe they're done messing with it/developing it either. So who knows what is to come? I know a few DMC fans that agree with you on the whining. But thse are few and far between. Actually, I was just reminded; I see this kind of reaction from the bulk of fans with the Resident Evil series....a lot. With the games, movies, books and even cosplayers. (I'd know, I'm one of them. XD) And I will never understand it because, at the end of the day; it's all up to Capcom who they let take things over and what they allow them to change. They decide whats canon; not us. So really; getting so upset over something so trivial is really a waste of energy.
