Hello folks, and now, I bring you a rant that has ABSO-POSI-LUTELY NOTHING to do with Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. Thank god, cause if I have to make another "rant" regarding that game, I think I'd have to start a zombie apocalypse with some 245 - Trioxin. Instead, this rant is going to be on the subject of a game that has been the subject of tons of controversy.

If your a fan of Capcom, you'll probably be familiar with the famous hack-n'-slash franchise known as Devil May Cry. Well, in September 2010, Capcom officially announced that there would be a new Devil May Cry installment in the series. It would be an origin story that established how Dante, the main protagonist of the series, came to grips with his half-demon half-human heritage, and Capcom would outsource the game to Ninja Theory, a company known for only 2 major titles: Heavenly Sword and Enslaved.

With the announcement came a few screenshots and a trailer of the game. In the 4 Devil May Cry titles before this, Dante had slightly long white hair and a normally clean face. In the screenshots and trailer, however, he sports short black hair, and his face now has a few bruises here and there. Also worth noting is the fact that he smokes.

Now, think back a year earlier to September 2009. It was that time that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 was announced and had a teaser trailer. One certain individual known, at the time, as Aknotholeresident made a video showing his initial reaction to the trailer. In short, he was not pleased with not only the trailer, but Sonic 4 as a whole, stating the fact that Sega used the modern Sonic model as his reason.

Well, when Dante's new design was revealed, the fans' reactions were roughly the same as Aknot-headed nutcase's. In fact, they were furious. They constantly bitched and moaned about the design, claiming that the game would suck because of Dante's character design and blaming both Capcom and Ninja Theory.

Now, I was furious as well, but for different reasons. I wasn't mad at Capcom or Ninja Theory, and I wasn't upset about the character design for Dante. Rather, I was upset at the people who were upset at the character design. You see, unlike most idiots who make a big deal of things when it comes to video games, I'm willing to look past something as trivial as a character design.

Back when I first joined deviantART, I wasn't on this BatCountryDouche account. I was instead on an account called TheChris9000. I was a complete and total noob back then, so all I did was upload stupid shit such as demotivational posters (pretty much stuff you'll find by looking in my Scrap bin). With my second demotivational poster, I ranted in the description about how stupid the Devil May Cry fans were acting. Fortunately for me, I didn't conjure a negative response.

So, it's about a year later. New games have been announced, new gameplay has been shown, I'm now on a new account thanks to some e-drama that I'd rather not discuss...

... and yet, everyone's still on square one... I still stand by what I said... and everyone feels exactly the same way.

Why are people still complaining about this bullshit? I honestly have no fucking idea why the Devil May Cry fans are so hellbent on letting everyone know that this game will "suck" (and I use that term EXTREMELY loosely).

Are we really reaching a point in video gaming where character designs determine whether or not a game will be good and fun? It's almost as if gameplay (which is the REAL factor behind a game being good) doesn't matter anymore. I believe that James Rolfe, the Angry Video Game Nerd, said it best when he stated this in his Power Glove review and Atari 5200 review:

What's the most important aspect of any fucking game? Well, being able to fucking play it.

I really should've seen this coming ever since Devil May Cry 4. Why? Well, turns out that DmC isn't the first time that the Devil May Cry fans have shown some stupidity. When Devil May Cry 4 came out, fans were outraged at the fact that the game would have an Xbox 360 port. However, it's STILL not as bad as what the fans are complaining about NOW.

Of course, fans will say that Dante looks like one of the guys at Ninja Theory, and will cite it as a reason why the game will suck. My response is: ............ so?

This isn't the first time that a character has had his or her design based off of someone in real life. Remember Solid Snake from Metal Gear? His body and physique were based off of actors such as Jean-Claude Van Damme. Take a look at Samanosuke from Onimusha (which is ANOTHER franchise from Capcom). His voice actor's face was used for his character model. And for one last example, Jean-Claude Van Damme's appearance was used for Johnny Cage from Mortal Kombat.

So, yeah... there really shouldn't be a problem with basing Dante's new appearance off of someone at Ninja Theory.

Also, the very fact that Ninja Theory is making the game is enough to piss a fan off. Honestly, I don't get what's so bad about Ninja Theory. Not counting that one game (its name escapes me at the moment) that they made as Just Add Monsters, so far, Ninja Theory has only made two games (one of which was pretty good [Heavenly Sword], while the other I haven't played [Enslaved]). Granted, they might not be on the same level as Capcom, but they're sure as hell no LJN.

Well, there's my "rant" on DmC. If the fans don't stop bitching about DmC and Dante's new character design, then I can safely say that there's no hope for the fanbase.
Just letting out some steam here.

I'm calling it now. Someone's gonna call me stupid and troll me for defending New Dante.

If you REALLY want a good rant on people not shutting the fuck up about DmC, go here ---> [link]

You are absolutely right in my opinion.

I'm a huge fan of the series and I will admit that I prefer the original story line and I was displeased with the new look of Dante when I FIRST saw the beginning released videos of this game but I was still excited none-the-less over it. It was interesting! And you know what? I'm completely in love with the new DmC, because I gave it a chance. The game is absolutely wonderful in my opinion and I don't understand why sooo many people are whining and complaining over it. It's not terrible at all. The story line DMC fans are so used to is changed but who cares? It's a re-imagining of the series and I honestly pray that they make a sequel to it; I'm definitely going to buy it.

Back to the look of Dante, like I said, I was displeased when I first saw him, but right away I got over it. I was like, "Eh, he still looks pretty bad ass." Now, I love the look of him, even Vergil (I've heard complaints about him too). It's cool and bitching over his hair, he gets white hair in the game. DmC Devil May Cry is supposed to be before Dante understands who he truly is (like you stated). Who knows? Even if Capcom didn't allow Ninja Theory to work on it too, they could have gone back to the origins and had their beloved Dante with black, short hair too. I love how they made him and all the characters in the game. They did a wonderful job and they should be proud of themselves for making such a marvelous game.

I have a feeling, however, that it's not just because this is Devil May Cry that everybody's so upset with it. It seems like lately, everybody is upset with EVERYTHING. Whether its a game, movie, or tv show. People always find the stupidest shit to complain about.

Great rant! (:

I was so happy to learn that there was a new Devil May Cry game, i have Devil May Cry 4 and i've adored it because it was my first PS3 game and my first Devil May Cry game. I'm a big Dante fan and i don't really care that his looks changed. It's a freaking parallel world anything can happen. I did complained a bit it was about the first trailer that was out. Which was in 2010 when i saw Dante smoke, as the trailers went by i saw that they got rid of that part of his personality so now i have nothing to complain about. Only that i don't have it yet

I have played and owned all previous copies of the DMC series. I even own both the original ps2 copies and the HD collection. I have also bought and finished DmC. I loved Dante before but he always seemed to have an ever changing personality along with odd obsessions they (CAPCOM) tossed in to make the character seem more like a person you would meet on the street.

But I personally like this reboot. Dante is cocky as ever, even if he has a foul mouth at times and has his usual perverted streak. And heck, I like how they explained what happened right away about the twins past. Even how Vergil and Dante met up in the game. I also like the controls a bit better. And the WAS some platforming in the original games. Otherwise Dante wouldn't have much use for his jumping ability. And I like how they brought it out with a nice flare and incorporated the battle controls with it as well. I can see why they ranted in the beginning. Even I went "WTF?!" when I saw it.

And here is a real kicker. They are still bitching about the game and movie is being planned. It's being written by the guy who writes the Resident Evil movies. I'm willing to give this movie a chance as long as they don't pulled a Super Mario Bros. stunt and make a cool that has nothing to do with the games except the main characters.

Not talking about the game here, as i love the reboot, however, I am EXTREME skeptical that the guy who written the RE movies will put the DmC movie into good reviews. It's been what, 6 movies? All of them flops. I don't mind a DmC movie, so long as THAT guy doesn't write, because of how bad RE movies are right now. :(

The first two movies were written by the same guy but those after the second RE film were torn into pieces by a different writer. I think the guy who wrote the first two could manage a pretty cool DMC film. But if the guy who wrote the last few RE films, no, I don't want to think of it. It would be horrid.

To those in defense of this game, I agree with you on everything all in all! And I still agree with you!

If people kept being stuck in their own views without watching the latest trailers, interviews, press cons, and demos or even reading the interviews if they're too lazy to watch, then they're just stuck up in their own wantings, shutting their minds off from reasoning and logic, troll and think that their views are the right one while ours aren't.

You know? It would be just as worse if Capcom would go for the opposite thing (sticking to the original canon and not make an alternate universe of DMC). If we keep on looking at Old Dante again and again, then we'd complain too and ask for a new and better Dante. I am glad they took that risk! They were running out of ideas on him anyway and some fans are getting annoyed and tired of him; those fans do have a point.
Despite what I said about him, I still like Old Dante. Just because I like him doesn't mean I cannot be critical about him, meaning sensing his cons!

For those who have legit reasons not to like it, I respect your choice for not liking the new versions of the Sons of Sparda and/or this game. But if those reasons are the same since 2 years ago, then you're just stuck in the past like glue! Too bad you'll miss out on this...

DMC is about making combos (the hack&slash/beat 'em up/ fighting styled action genre that defines it), not the looks of the characters and the setting! Demons can be in any form, in any place!

I would be upset if the game turned into an RPG.

Long as the genre remains the same, long as it's fine.
I too was upset about Dante's new look and yeah, that 2010 version was rubbish. But if you compare that version to the one that's currently used. You'll see GREAT difference.

And now it's all over again, cause people complain about Vergil now :P :P :P

I agree with you; it wouldn't be a DMC game if there was a DMC RPG. They should just turn that into a spin-off instead, if Capcom thought of it that is...

From what I have seen in the Gamerscom Trailer, Vergil still has the ruthlessness of the original. When Dante grew concerned for Kat captured, he never gave a damn about her; he only viewed her as a pawn of his organization. So there is that "brotherly love" hints from DMC3 in which they disagree in a lot of things. He still has that lust for power, even if it means at the cost of others' lives (like in this game now). He indeed found "The Order" using the funds he got. Craving for power can be obsession for any source of it, be it on a demon's power or even wealth!

And it's not the first time the twins worked together; remember DMC3 Mission 19 Arkham battle? That is my most fav boss battle in that game! They did team up, albeit for a very short time. And I also used those two in UMvC3. I was amazed on XusesGB's Sons of Sparda combo montage; I know I can't do long combos like he does, but I know it takes tons of practice to pull it off, provided you have 5 levels of the Hyper gauge filled up!
